March 2007 the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Roehampton was formerly opened by Her Majesty The Queen. The state-of-the-art centre serves as the home of the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), the governing body of tennis in Great Britain. |
Dr Ann Quinn, Head of Sports Science at the LTA, made a request for one EnergyPod to be installed within the sports science suite for players to be able to harness the benefits that accrue from taking a controlled rest during the day. |
Since installation the EnergyPod has proven a popular resource for players. After trying the EnergyPod former British number one Tim Henman was quoted as saying, “I was a bit sceptical but I thought I’d give it a go. After a couple of minutes wondering if it was all a bit of a mind game – bang – the next thing I knew I’d slept like a baby for 20 minutes! I’ll have to see if they make a portable one so I can take it on the road with me.” |
Further co-operation between MetroNaps and the sports science team is planned with the possibility of a study analysing the effects of a controlled rest on afternoon performance and subsequent recovery. |
Commenting on the partnership with MetroNaps, Dr. Karl Cooke, the LTA’s Pre & Post Performance Manager said, “Tennis players have very demanding schedules and our experience has been that many players benefit from additional sleep through strategically timed naps during a typical day. Napping has many benefits but the improvements in recovery, memory and learning have particular relevance to the work we are doing to support our best players.” |
